Claudia Vece - Your Neuro Emotional Trainer

Due to the suspension of sports activities in gyms and dedicated fitness centres during the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people began to exercise outdoors, rediscovering the pleasure of being in contact with nature and its elements. Mountain biking, walking, hiking in the mountains or paddleboarding on lakes are just some of the activities practised in our region. But one sport in particular has made a strong comeback around the world in recent years: surfing.

Surfing might seem like a sport limited to certain countries because of the need for ocean waves. Today, however, an increasing number of sports centres offer artificial wave pools, creating ideal environments for both learning and practising.

The number of people practising surfing has grown significantly over the years, partly because of the many physical and psychological benefits associated with the sport.

Companies have also begun to promote surfing activities for their employees, both as a team-building experience and as part of corporate wellness programmes.

Water has a naturally calming effect and offers an environment in which movement, balance and attention come together. Combined with physical activity, surfing engages both mind and body in a continuous search for balance and coordination, contributing to a sense of well-being and renewed energy.

When mind and body work together in harmony, attention shifts towards the present moment, helping to reduce perceived stress and promote emotional well-being.

The benefits of spending a day surfing can be experienced both mentally and physically. Surfing encourages you to focus on the present moment, become more aware of your physical abilities, and develop a greater understanding and acceptance of your own limits and potential.

It also encourages patience and perseverance, awareness of emotions and physical sensations, concentration and balance. Learning to catch a wave and stand on a surfboard can generate a powerful sense of achievement, reinforcing the idea that progress is possible through practice, commitment and determination.

Surfing also fosters a close relationship with the natural environment. Practising the sport can strengthen awareness of the ocean and encourage greater respect for the ecosystems in which surfing takes place.

Whether practised alone, with friends or with colleagues, surfing can create a strong sense of enthusiasm, freedom and connection. This is also one of the reasons why surfing is often combined with yoga: the two disciplines share an emphasis on balance, awareness, presence and the connection between mind and body.

Surfing has also increasingly been explored within initiatives focused on physical activity, mental well-being and quality of life. Programmes in different countries have investigated the potential benefits of surfing and other nature-based activities as complementary approaches to promoting physical and psychological well-being.

Surfing may therefore be much more than a sport: it can become an opportunity to reconnect with your body, your mind and the natural environment.
