To understand the difference between acting on instinct and acting on intuition, it is useful to first look at how the human brain responds to different situations, because the way we approach challenges can change significantly depending on our emotional and physiological state.
One influential historical model is the “triune brain” theory proposed by American physician and neuroscientist Paul MacLean (1913–2007). MacLean used this model to describe the brain in terms of three broad functional systems.
Today, neuroscience considers this model an oversimplification: the brain does not operate as three separate brains, and complex behaviours emerge from interconnected neural networks. Nevertheless, MacLean’s framework can still serve as a useful metaphor for understanding the relationship between automatic responses, emotions and higher cognitive functions.
REPTILIAN BRAIN: In MacLean’s model, this represents the most primitive layer of the brain and is associated with basic functions related to survival, automatic behaviour and instinctive responses.
When we perceive danger, our nervous system can rapidly activate protective responses without requiring extensive conscious analysis. In this sense, we can describe the response as instinctive: its priority is immediate action rather than careful consideration of every possible consequence.
LIMBIC SYSTEM: This term traditionally refers to a group of interconnected brain structures involved in processes including emotion, motivation, memory and learning. Emotional responses help us interpret information coming both from our surroundings and from within the body and influence the way we react to events.
PREFRONTAL CORTEX: The prefrontal cortex plays an important role in higher cognitive functions such as planning, reasoning, decision-making, impulse control, evaluating consequences and adapting behaviour according to our goals.
It also contributes to our ability to imagine future scenarios, consider different possibilities and generate creative solutions. In everyday language, some of these processes may contribute to what we experience as intuition, although intuition itself is not located in a single area of the brain.
MacLean’s model therefore provides a simple metaphor for understanding what can happen when we perceive a threat.
During an acute stress response, the nervous system prioritises rapid action. Heart rate, breathing, attention and muscle readiness can change, preparing the body to respond to the situation. At the same time, intense stress can temporarily make complex reasoning, flexible thinking and decision-making more difficult.
Today, however, most of us are not regularly escaping wild animals or surviving in hostile environments. This raises an interesting question: what does our brain perceive as a threat in modern life? And are we aware of the moments when we react automatically rather than responding with greater reflection and awareness?
Several factors can influence this process.
When we face a genuine and immediate threat—such as an accident or another dangerous situation—the nervous system can activate the familiar fight, flight or freeze response.
In an emergency, our priority is not necessarily to analyse every detail of what is happening, but to protect ourselves and respond rapidly. Once the immediate threat has passed and physiological arousal decreases, we are generally better able to reflect on and process what happened.
Thoughts can influence our emotional and physiological responses. The way we interpret events, tell ourselves the story of what is happening and attribute intentions to other people can affect how threatening or manageable a situation feels.
If, during a conversation, we feel attacked, offended or criticised, for example, we may become defensive and reactive rather than remaining open to dialogue and collaboration.
Thoughts such as “I don’t deserve this” or “If this happens, everything will go terribly wrong” can contribute to a heightened state of stress, particularly when they become repetitive.
Repeated patterns of negative thinking can reinforce emotional and behavioural responses over time. This does not mean that thoughts alone cause conditions such as depression or other mental health disorders, which are complex and multifactorial. However, learning to recognise recurring thought patterns can be an important part of developing greater emotional awareness and self-regulation.
What we eat and drink, as well as medications, alcohol and other substances, can influence both physical and mental functioning.
A balanced diet provides the nutrients required for the brain and body to function effectively. Rather than thinking of health in terms of making the body “acidic” or “alkaline”—the body tightly regulates blood pH through physiological mechanisms—it is more useful to focus on a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Sleep plays an essential role in physical and psychological well-being. Insufficient or irregular sleep can affect concentration, mood, memory, decision-making and our ability to regulate emotions.
Sleep also supports many important physiological processes. However, the idea that the liver and kidneys become “loaded with toxins” because of irregular sleep is an oversimplification. These organs continuously perform essential metabolic and filtration functions.
What remains clear is that rest is fundamental to our ability to function effectively and manage stress.
Our environment can influence our behaviour, stress levels and well-being. Social relationships, working conditions, lifestyle and repeated experiences can all shape the way we respond to the world around us.
Epigenetics studies changes in gene regulation that can occur without altering the underlying DNA sequence, and environmental factors can influence some of these processes. This does not mean, however, that negative people or experiences simply “activate the reptilian brain” through epigenetics.
From a practical perspective, being conscious of the environments we spend time in and the relationships we cultivate can nevertheless be important for our psychological well-being and personal development.
Accessing our resources and expressing our potential means developing the ability to move beyond purely automatic reactions and engage the cognitive, emotional and relational capacities that allow us to reflect, create, plan and make conscious decisions.
The goal is not to eliminate instinct—our automatic protective responses have an important function—but to recognise when they are useful and when a situation would benefit from a more deliberate response.
